Challenge

Outdoor Urban Deployment with Strict Green Requirements

Densely populated urban areas require highly durable and aesthetically suitable concrete substations for grid distribution. As part of its 2025 grid expansion, E.ON needed to establish these urban connection points at capacities up to 1250 kVA, strictly adhering to new regulations requiring eco-friendly, SF6-free equipment.

However, these green medium-voltage RMUs require significantly more physical space inside the enclosure. E.ON faced the challenge of deploying these bulkier systems without increasing external footprints, risking environmental ingress, or burdening their own internal procurement teams with complex material and transport coordination.

Solution

Optimised Outdoor Configuration with IP Type-Testing

Harju Elekter developed a newly configured HEKA C concrete substation variant optimised for outdoor urban deployment. Our engineering teams reimagined the internal layout, modifying the space to fit the larger SF6-free RMU, a high-power 1250 kVA transformer, and the secondary low-voltage panels into a compact, standardised footprint.

To ensure high reliability against harsh outdoor weather conditions, we fast-tracked engineering and successfully type-tested the new design for IP (Ingress Protection) classification.

Simultaneously, Harju Elekter eliminated project friction by managing all transport logistics and coordinating the arrival of customer-supplied materials.

Result

Reliable Outdoor Substations with Full Administrative Handover

E.ON seamlessly expanded its urban network on schedule, deploying a fully certified, environmentally friendly, and robust outdoor substation family.

By taking full ownership of the technical layout modifications, strict IP validation, and cross-party component logistics, Harju Elekter reduced the client’s administrative overhead.
